Pulp Therapy (Baby Root Canal)

Avoid tooth extractions and preserve the space needed for your child’s permanent teeth

Getting a root canal can prevent tooth extractions!

Pulp therapy or Baby root canal is just one fancy word for removal of a small part of the infected baby nerve to make a tooth healthy again. In order to save the tooth, bacteria are removed and the resulting space is filled with special medication. Tooth is then restored to its full function with a crown.

WHY DO THIS PROCEDURE? WHY NOT TO EXTRACT A BABY TOOTH THAT IS GOING TO COME OUT ANYWAYS?

Well, on a surface extraction seems like a very simple solution. In reality, these teeth are programmed by nature to be in the child’s mouth for a very specific period of time. Some baby teeth come out at the age 6, some at the age of 10, some are exfoliating as late as 12-13 years of age. Baby teeth guide a child’s developing adult teeth into the proper space, they are used to chew food and aid the development of the child’s dental arches. Some patients believe that removing a tooth that has problems is the solution, but what is not realized is that pulling a tooth may ultimately be more costly and cause significant problems with space maintenance for permanent teeth.

Pulp treatment is highly successful and usually lasts the lifetime of the baby tooth, although on occasion, a tooth will have to be extracted due to new or recurrent infections.
